A Heart for Animals and a Voice for Better Shelters

Animals are part of the family in homes throughout Manatee County. When animals enter public care, compassion must be backed by safe facilities, humane treatment, and systems that allow shelter staff and volunteers to care for them properly.

That is why Melton Little's promise - "A heart for animals. A voice in Tallahassee." - matters now. Manatee County residents have raised serious concerns about conditions in the county's animal shelter system. Melton believes those concerns deserve action, transparency, and accountability.

Serious concerns at the Bishop Animal Shelter

Local reporting in April and May 2026 documented concerns raised by volunteers and animal advocates about the Bishop Animal Shelter. Those concerns included limited protection from Florida's heat and

weather, inadequate shade, fencing and tripping hazards, and difficulty accessing dogs during inclement weather.

Manatee County officials have disputed some of those claims, said corrective upgrades were made, and maintained that the shelter provides appropriate care. County commissioners nevertheless asked the University of Florida's Shelter Medicine Program to conduct an independent review and recommend improvements. That review was expected in August 2026.

Safe shelter conditions are a basic responsibility

Animals in county care deserve adequate shade and cooling, clean and functional facilities, safe enclosures, reliable sanitation equipment, and a layout that allows caregivers to work safely in Florida weather. Those are not luxuries. They are the basic conditions required for humane care.

Shelter employees, volunteers, veterinarians, rescue partners, and residents should also be heard when they report a problem. Concerns should be documented, independently evaluated, corrected promptly, and explained clearly to the public.

Melton supports better shelters and stronger protections

As a candidate for Florida House District 71, Melton supports clear humane-care standards, stronger animal protections, transparent facility reviews, and practical funding opportunities for essential improvements. He also believes spending must be accountable: public money should produce safe, functional shelters rather than repeated repairs after preventable problems.
