Republican by Choice: Why Melton Little Found His Political Home

Some people inherit a political label. Others arrive at one after years of experience, reflection, and a deliberate examination of what they believe.
Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump, and Tulsi Gabbard each followed a different path to the Republican Party. Their stories are not identical, but they share something important: each made a conscious choice to change political direction.
Ronald Reagan spent 30 years as a registered Democrat before becoming a Republican in 1962. He believed his former party had moved away from his concerns about the growing federal government, excessive regulation, taxation, and national defense.
Donald Trump’s political affiliation also changed during his life before he ultimately chose the Republican Party and built the America First movement around its future.
Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and presidential candidate, left the Democratic Party in 2022 and officially became a Republican in 2024.
Melton Little also began his political journey as a Democrat—but that label no longer reflected the principles he had come to recognize as his own.
A Change of Party—Not a Change of Principles
Melton’s decision was not about hiding his past. It was about being honest about where he stands today.
The values that led him to the Republican Party were already deeply rooted in his life: faith, freedom, personal responsibility, strong families, limited government, and putting America First.
As the Democratic Party moved further away from those principles, Melton increasingly realized that it was no longer his political home.

The “Last Straw”
For Melton, the decision developed over time—but one issue finally made the choice unmistakable.
During an interview with Coastal Connection News, Melton explained:
“The absolute last straw for me was the vaccine mandates.”
The government’s use of mandates during the COVID-19 era brought Melton’s concerns about personal freedom and government overreach into sharp focus. That moment did not create his convictions. It confirmed where those convictions belonged.
